Job Description

About Us

Apple Valley News Now is the local ABC affiliate serving the Yakima/Tri-Cities market of Washington state and is part of Morgan Murphy Media. We are a family-owned, people-first company, and our communities are at the core of what we do and who we are.

Local journalism is changing - and so are we. We serve our audience wherever they are: on television, streaming, our website and app, and the social platforms they use every day. We believe strong reporting, compelling video and meaningful community connection matter on every screen.

About This Opportunity

Apple Valley News Now is seeking an innovative, audience-focused News Anchor/MMJ to anchor local newscasts and create distinctive journalism across broadcast, digital, streaming and social platforms. This role is based at KVEW-TV in Kennewick, Washington.

The right candidate is a trusted on-air communicator and a curious, versatile journalist who can identify what matters to our community, report it with accuracy and empathy, and adapt each story for the platform and audience it serves. You are comfortable moving quickly on breaking news, connecting directly with viewers and experimenting with new ways to tell local stories.

What You'll Do

  • Anchor newscasts, live reports, breaking-news coverage and news briefs with credibility, urgency and personality.
  • Research, pitch, shoot, write, edit and deliver original local stories for television, web, streaming and social platforms.
  • Create platform-native content, including vertical video, live social updates and concise explainers that help audiences understand why a story matters.
  • Turn daily reporting into timely, accurate digital stories, video, headlines, captions and audience-facing updates.
  • Enterprise compelling stories that reflect the people, issues and opportunities shaping the Yakima/Tri-Cities region.
  • Use sound editorial judgment and uphold journalism ethics, accuracy standards, fairness and libel law.
  • Collaborate with producers, digital staff, and newsroom leadership on the strongest presentation for every story.
  • Engage with the community online and in person; build trusted source relationships and listen for story ideas.
  • Participate in producing newscasts and other newsroom responsibilities as assigned by the news director.
  • Operate TV news cameras, mobile devices, editing software and production apps to produce high-quality visual journalism.

What You'll Bring

  • At least four years of experience as a multimedia journalist, reporter and/or anchor.
  • A bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • Demonstrated ability to anchor professionally from the studio and report effectively in the field and live.
  • Strong broadcast, digital and AP Style writing skills.
  • A proven ability to tell clear, engaging stories with video, sound, text and social-first formats.
  • Strong editorial judgment and knowledge of journalism ethics, accuracy standards and libel law.
  • A collaborative, self-directed mindset, with excellent organization and the ability to meet daily deadlines.
  • Curiosity about changing audience habits and enthusiasm for learning new tools, formats and platforms.
  • Experience with Inception and Adobe is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 15 pounds.

What You'll Get in Return

You'll join a supportive newsroom and management team that value your work, your time and your perspective. We are committed to a culture where employees can grow professionally and personally while doing meaningful journalism for the communities we serve.

Pay range: $20-$27 per hour

Benefits: Medical, dental, vision, prescription, life insurance and Employee Assistance Program benefits for employees and their families. Employees are also offered long-term disability insurance, flexible spending accounts, a 401(k), health savings account, employee referral program and paid time off, including vacation time equivalent to 80 hours per year depending on start date, one hour of sick time for every 40 hours worked, two personal days and nine paid holidays.
